Agave americana, American aloe


It is beautiful and majestic desert plant. Common names sentry plant, century plant, maguey or American aloe.  Plant type is cactus - succulent. Belongs to family Asparagaceae. RHS has given it Award of Garden Merit. US hardiness zone 8 to 11.
Its large in size agave. Flower stalk appears at age of ten years. Bloom is large and greenish yellow. Attracts humming birds. It can be used as accent or focal point in a garden. May not plant it close to pathways as it has pointed leaves. Take safety precautions while working on the plant.  Its life is for 30 years.



Has thick, thorny leaves of blue green color.
Older leaves curve downwards.

 
An offset.

Extremely heat and drought tolerant.


Propagated through seeds and offsets.

It is almost disease free.

Decorates all types of gardens and containers.

Likes to be full sun but can tolerate partial shade.
