Solanum crispum ‘Glasnevin’- Chilean potato vine.



Solanum crispum ‘Glasnevin'. AGM.
It is a species of flowering plant. Belongs to the family of Solanaceae. Native to Chile (Che le) and Peru. Common names are Chilean potato vine, Chilean nightshade, Chilean potato tree and potato vine. S
olamen (Latin) meaning comfort, solace.
RHS Has awarded the prestigious Award of  Garden Merit – AGM. USA Hardiness Zone - (9- 11). Has 5 inch long, ovate dark green leaves. 
Growing to 6 m tall, spread 2 M approx.   
Moist but well-drained soil. Take cuttings from summer to early autumn,  From seeds. Has certain medicinal uses. 
It can be toxic to a pet (cat n dog). 


It is a semi-evergreen, woody-stemmed climbing plant.


Bloom is fragrant and purple in color
(shape and color like potato flower).


Bloom time mid summer to mid autumn Jul to Nov. 

Wiry stems need support in shape of 
trellises, arbors, wall, poles or fences.

Hedychium coronarium - Butterfly Ginger Lily

 Hedychium coronarium - Other names are; Butterfly Ginger Lily, white garland-lily,  White Ginger Lily. Upright herbaceous perennial. Belongs to Zingiberaceae family. USA hardiness Zone- (8 – 10). RHS has awarded it Award of Garden Merit.

It can height from 3- 6 feet. Width is 2 to 3 ft.   Water need is medium. Maintenance requirement is medium.  

Its origin is from eastern Himalayas- India/ Nepal/Java. Has naturalized in other areas as well. Likes hot and humid summers and moist soil. No serious insect or disease problems. 

Containers may be sunk into ground water garden or pond. Stream and cottage gardens. Has many medicinal uses. 

Bloom is white, showy and fragrant.

Individual flower resemble butterfly.

 Pachypodium lamerei. Madagascar Palm. Phonetics- (Pakee, poey dee um). Belongs to Apocyanceae (apossy nacee) family. Origin is from Madgaskar Island. RHS has awarded it with AGM- Award of Garden Merit. Have few leaves at the top of brown stem. Used in succulent garden and decorative containers. 

Sandy and gravelly well drained soil. Ph alkaline. Flourishes under sun and partial shade. Almost disease free.  Mature plant bloom in summers – after 10 years. 

During/ frost Winters move it into the house. Water requirement low. Drought tolerant. Maintenance is low. Patio plant.  Due to its leaves location- it is called as palm. Its parts are poisonous.

Tabebuia bahamensis. Beef-Bush, Gumwood, White-Cedar, White Dwarf Tabebuia. Phoenetics- ta-bee-BEW-ee-uh, ba-ha-MEN-sis. Other names are Tabebuia affinis/ leonis. Family- Bignoniaceae. Origin- Bahamas. Water requirement average, drought tolerant. Foliage deciduous briefly. Full sun. USA Hardiness zone- 10a- 11. Soil ph mildly alkaline. Bloom – white/ near white/ lavender. 


Origin of this plant is from Bahama Island.


It can be 6 feet tall.

Ocimum tenuiflorum, Tulsi, Green Shri Tulsi.

Ocimum tenuiflorum. Commonly known as holy basil or tulsi.  Other names are Ocimum sanctum, Phoenetics- (OSSy -mum, ten-yoo-ee-FLOR-um).

USA Hardiness Zone (9a- 10b). Spacing- 1.5- 2 feet. Belongs to the Lamiaceae family.  Bloom time- Summer / early winter. 

 A fragrant and erect plant. Leaves are aromatic as it contains scented oil. Sprinkling water over the plant in the evening spreads aroma.

Sacred plant of India. Red leaved Tulsi is called Krishna and green leaved is termed as Shri Tulsi.  It is placed in office, temple and traditional homes. 

Has medicinal values used for various ailments. Has anti oxidant, anti viral anti septic properties. 


It is an aromatic perennial herb. 

Requires average Water.
Bloom  white/ near white. 

Grown from seeds in apot.

It is a religious plant in India. 

Height 12 to 18 inchs.

Manihot esculenta variegata, Manihot, Variegated Cassava, Tapioca 'Variegata.‘ Phonetics- (MANy-hot, eskew-LEN-ta ). Belongs to family of Euphorbeacae. USA Hardiness Zone- (10a- 11). 

Sun to partial shade.  Average water requirement. Height 4-6 feet. Color charteruse/ yellow. Average water requirement. Shrub, tender perennials. Height 4-6 feet. Ornamental value.

Parts poisonous if ingested. Bloom pale yellow/ cream. Bloom time- late fall early winter. Used for root crop, 6-8 months of frost free weather for root harvest is required. Bitter roots for starch and sweet varieties for vegetables after removing toxics.  Medium maint. No serious disease or insect problem.

Rauvolfia serpentina, Indian snake root plant

 Rauvolfia serpentina. 

Other names are Indian snakeroot, devil pepper, or serpentine wood. Belongs to Apocynaceae family. It is native to the Indian subcontinent and East Asia.

Has many medicinal uses- tranquilizer, antipsychotic and hypertension control. Roots are medicinal hub for sedative quality. 

Erect evergreen shrub. Height one to two feet approximately. Flowers are white, pinkish, red, occurring in whorls/ ring. Its fruit are tiny, oval, fleshy which turn a shiny purple-black when ripe.
